One of the guys in my BOB group (Band of Brothers – Men?s small group) said something yesterday that reminded me of the importance of having a Sabbath. I feel like this is a topic that I have sounded off on several times before, but it?s one that I think we need to be reminded of often. We live in such a fast-paced, performance-oriented society, it?s easy to overlook our need for rest. The reality is even God rested. After spending 6 days creating, God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:3). The need for a regular period of rest is deeply rooted in who we are as God?s creation.
In my own life, I?ve found that I am healthiest physically, emotionally, and spiritually when I follow God?s example and make time for a Sabbath. For me, that day is Monday (my regular day off). I take a break from my normal schedule. I?m home with my family. I avoid doing work related things and I make time for things that refuel me. For me, those are things like playing with my kids, cleaning the house (I know I?m weird, but it?s true!), doing some reading, and spending time with my wife. You?ll notice that my Sabbath doesn?t look like sitting on the couch or sleeping all day (what you might think of as rest). I?ve found that those things may meet my need for physical rest, but they don?t bring about the emotional and spiritual rest that I?m looking for.
Wherever you are at on your spiritual journey, I hope you?ll consider your personal need for rest.
